Yakshagaana


'Yakshagaana' is a popular folk theater form of Karnataka with a long history of nearly four hundred years. It is a unique harmony of musical tradition, eye-catching costumes, and authentic styles of dance, improvised gestures and acting with its extemporaneous dialogue appealing to a wide range of the community. In truth it is a vibrant, vigorous living form of theater art.

r in the districts of Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga and Kasaragod.
Yakshagaana mainly uses Tulu and Kannada for its plays.
A performance usually depicts a story from Indian epic poems and the Puranas.

First written evidence about present day Yakshagana is available on an inscription dated 1556 CE found at Lakshminarayana Temple, Kurugodu, Somasamudra, Bellary district.
