Ferdinand Kittel

Ever heard of any foreigner writing a dictionary in any Indian language!? Make the count as 1..

Reverend Ferdinand Kittel - a missionary from Germany known for producing the first ever `Kannada-English dictionary` of about 70,000 words in 1894.

Along with the dictionary, he also wrote a book on Kannada grammar called `A Grammar of the Kannada Language: Comprising the Three Dialects of the language`.
He translated Nagavarma's work on Kannada prosody, and also known for composing many poems in Kannada!

A statue at the end of Mahatma Gandhi road in the city of Bangalore commemorates him. Austin Town in Bangalore was renamed "F Kittel Nagar". (thou ppl rarely use the new name!)
